New Non-Executive Directors join Pay.UK Board to help support governance and industry collaboration
Pay.UK, the recognised operator and standards body for the UK’s interbank retail payment systems, has announced the appointments of Alison Berryman, Matthijs Boon and Pranay Ahluwalia to the Pay.UK Board as industry Non-Executive Directors (NEDs), effective 1 July 2026.
These appointments mean that the Pay.UK Board now has 50/50 representation across industry and independent NEDs. The new Directors bring a mix of global payments expertise, hands-on operational leadership and deep regulatory experience across retail banking and fintech:
- Alison (Ali) Berryman, a seasoned financial services executive with over 25 years of experience across UK retail banking, payments, and technology. As the Chief Operating Officer for the Bank of Ireland UK, she brings extensive knowledge in operational resilience, regulatory reporting, fraud prevention and large-scale digital transformation.
- Matthijs Boon, brings over 25 years of experience in international payments, retail banking and digital money. As Chief Partnerships Officer at Equals, he has deep insight in building global payment ecosystems, establishing complex banking partnerships and driving international commercial and regulatory strategy.
- Pranay Ahluwalia, General Manager for Payments at Monzo Bank, where he leads the end-to-end build, delivery, and execution of global payment rails, merchant acquiring, and next-generation core infrastructure. With over 20 years of experience, including roles as Chief Product Officer at Teya and Global GM for B2B Payments at Amazon, he possesses expertise in building global payment systems across three continents and creating long-term strategic deals and partnerships.
The new NEDs join at a pivotal moment as Pay.UK continues to actively collaborate with industry and government to champion and support the creation of the future retail payments ecosystem.
As the industry navigates rapid shifts in digital money, stablecoins, and AI as well as emerging opportunities and challenges, these appointments will help strengthen Pay.UK’s expertise and governance to support innovation, industry initiatives, operational resilience and collaborative leadership. This includes accelerating new initiatives like the changes to the Faster Payment System liquidity model and Enhanced Data Exchange (EDEx) to combat fraud, while continuing to keep payments running.
Commenting on the appointments, Mark Hoban, Chair of Pay.UK, said: “I am delighted that Ali, Matthijs and Pranay have been appointed as Non-Executive Directors of Pay.UK. Together, they bring a wealth of experience spanning payments, technology, regulation, operational resilience and innovation, further strengthening the expertise and perspectives represented on our Board. Their appointments come at an important time for the industry, and I am confident they will make a valuable contribution as Pay.UK continues to deliver safe, resilient and effective payment systems while supporting the evolution of the UK’s future retail payments ecosystem.”
Matthijs Boon, Chief Partnerships Officer at Equals, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining the Pay.UK Board and look forward to working with fellow directors to strengthen the UK’s payment systems during such a pivotal time of change, with a key focus on delivering positive outcomes for users and participants.”
These appointments support Pay.UK’s new remit following changes announced by the Payments Vision Delivery Committee at Mansion House 2025. To deliver continued reliability, value, and efficiency to everyone who relies on its payment systems, Pay.UK updated its Articles of Association in March 2026 to introduce three additional industry NEDs. This expanded the board from 12 to 14 directors (the Chair, CEO, six industry NEDs, and six independent NEDs), ensuring a richer mix of technical expertise and a more comprehensive understanding of emerging ecosystem opportunities and risks. The appointments of Alison Berryman, Matthijs Boon, and Pranay Ahluwalia will further enrich this diversity and wealth of knowledge, helping to create a resilient payment ecosystem.
