Sort Code Checker
Online banking has become a popular means of making payments and there has been a considerable increase in the number of people using this service today (eg. via online banking used to pay a regular bill with a Direct Debit or for other irregular payments). Therefore, the efficiency and seamless nature of automated payments is of the upmost importance.
Pay.UK offers a Sort Code Checker – a one-stop-shop tool available to the payments industry. You can view this from the link below.
Using data updated every week, this online tool can distinguish whether a sort code has the ability to receive Faster Payments, Bacs Credits and CHAPS payments. The tool also confirms whether it is possible to set up a Direct Debit instruction on the account*, clear a cheque, or pay a paper credit through the cheque and credit clearing facility.
Why up-to-date sort code data is important
Using out of date information can result in delayed payments payments not being processed, resulting in extra costs to the business, individuals and banks.
Alongside the Sort Code Checker, best practice guidelines recommend all businesses and banks refresh their reference data weekly, and smaller businesses on a monthly basis.
The Extended Industry Sorting Code Directory (EISCD)
The EISCD is a comprehensive database of payments-related information for financial institutions participating in the UK Payment Schemes: Bacs, CHAPS, Faster Payments and Cheque and Credit Clearing. The directory is updated weekly, and is available on a subscription basis from VocaLink, and other external providers.
The Sort Code Checker is provided for information purposes only. While every effort is made to provide accurate data, users must acknowledge that Pay.UK accepts no liability whatsoever with respect to its accuracy.
*Some types of savings and investment accounts cannot accept Direct Debit instructions. Only your bank can confirm the services that are available to you. If you are making an important payment, which is time critical, we recommend that you speak to your bank or building society first to confirm the services on offer to you.
Individual sort codes are allocated by members of the UK payment schemes (Bacs, CHAPS, Faster Payments and Cheque and Credit Clearing) to those financial institutions that participate in one or more of the Schemes.
