Almost 60 years after it was first launched, Direct Debit is growing faster than ever. Recent data from Pay.UK reveals the scheme processed a record 5 billion transactions in 2025 – cementing its position as the UK’s number one choice for recurring payments.
London, 28 July 2026: Pay.UK, the recognised operator and standards body for the UK’s interbank retail payment systems, today published new research on Direct Debit market perceptions, drawing on responses from over 2000 UK consumers, over 300 senior merchant representatives and over 200 director-level (or above) banking and fintech professionals.
Direct Debit’s widespread use is closely linked to the confidence it gives consumers, with a reported 92% satisfaction rate. Among those who view Direct Debit positively, the predictability of payments was a key driver of satisfaction, with consumers valuing Direct Debit’s reliability (65%) and the way it helps them manage their finances (60%). The Direct Debit Guarantee was also identified as an important factor (51%).
Merchants and financial institutions echoed consumers’ positive sentiment, standing at 96% satisfaction. 94% of banks and fintechs offer the service to their customers, while 62% of merchants accept Direct Debit payments. The Direct Debit Guarantee – a consumer protection mechanism unique to the scheme – is proving to be a commercial driver as well as a trust signal: 80% of merchants say it makes them more likely to accept Direct Debit payments.
Commenting on the report, David Crawford, Chief Strategy & Transformation Officer at Pay.UK, said: “Behind these numbers are billions of real payments – rent, energy bills, council tax, gym memberships – processed quietly and reliably. Our research suggests that the high levels of consumer satisfaction with Direct Debit, and the consistently positive ratings it receives from financial institutions, demonstrate that the scheme is doing exactly what it was designed to do.”
Direct Debit plays an important role in the overall mix of available payment methods. It remains the leading payment method for recurring services, such as mortgages, utilities, memberships and gaming passes with 98% of consumers being aware of the scheme.
Alongside delivering Direct Debits, Pay.UK also facilitates the development of complementary payment options, including commercial variable recurring payments, to enhance choice for consumers and businesses and facilitate a product suite that is inclusive, accessible and responsive to the changing needs of consumers and businesses.
